Slovakia Foreign Worker Rules: What Employers Need to Know

Slovakia has instituted major changes that pertain to the employment of foreign manpower in the country, and these changes include the employment of people of third-country origin, meaning those from outside the European Union. This is more significant for the companies that rely on manpower from outside Slovakia.

As per the study, Slovakia has made amendments to the Foreign Residence Act and the Employment Services Act, and the effective date is July 15, 2026. The amendments will touch upon the work authorisation rules, temporary protection holders from Ukraine and the validity of certain immigration documents.

For employers, it is evident that the process of hiring foreign workers in Slovakia has become more streamlined. Therefore, companies have to engage in the process of recruitment in a more careful way and be responsible for preparing the necessary documents.

Why This Matters for Employers

There are many companies in Slovakia that are experiencing a labour shortage and therefore are looking for foreign employees. Industries such as manufacturing, logistics, automotive, construction, hospitality, industrial services, and technical work always need qualified and efficient manpower.

In the case of not having a sufficient workforce, a business might face serious problems. Logistics and production may be affected. Construction processes may be postponed, and the existing staff may undergo changes in their workloads.

That is why international recruitment becomes an important element of human resource planning for many Slovak companies.

Key Changes Employers Should Understand

One new regulation establishes a requirement for foreign workers who obtained national visas to apply for temporary residence for employment. They should keep working in the same position for which they have received a work permit.

That means that employers must be cautious while describing the working position and employment conditions. The job title and the duties should correspond

An updated regulation makes it possible for some foreign graduates who graduated from secondary or higher education institutions in Slovakia to be employed and gain access to the Slovak labour market.

Ukraine-Related Employment Measures

Another important aspect refers to the employment of Ukrainian citizens receiving temporary protection. Certain work permits and employment letters, which were supposed to be valid during wartime, will last for two months, until July 15, 2027.

Employers will continue employing foreign workers affected by the issue of lack of credentials for the time needed for the review of their applications for legal residence until the specified date.

Why Planning and Compliance Matter

Employers cannot be casual about foreign hiring. They need to know their labour requirements before recruiting. These include job title, skill levels required, salary, benefits provided, workplace of the employee, shifts required, terms of contract, paperwork, and the date by which the candidate is expected to join.

This will reduce delays as well as wrong selection during recruitment. It will also ensure that candidates understand what they are getting into before accepting the offer made.

Compliance is equally important, as wrong paperwork, unclear job descriptions or delays in paperwork can cause hiring delays and disruption of business activities.
