Czechia’s Skills Gap in 2026: What Employers Need to Fix in Their Hiring Plans

Czechia has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU, but many companies are still unable to find the people they need. More than six in ten employers report difficulty filling positions. The issue is therefore not simply a lack of jobseekers. In many cases, the available skills do not match the jobs companies are trying to fill.

In this blog, we’ll look at why this skills gap is important for Czech employers and what businesses should be thinking about when planning their workforce for 2026.

The Problem Is Often a Skills Mismatch

Companies are not looking for just any available employee. Many vacancies require a particular trade, technical background or level of experience.

This is especially clear in construction and automotive businesses, where employers often need people with very specific profiles. Technicians, engineers and skilled tradespeople have remained difficult to find for a long time.

That changes the hiring problem. Increasing the number of applicants will not help if those applicants do not have the skills required for the job.

Unfilled Roles Can Hold Back Business Growth

A shortage of qualified employees can affect more than the HR department.

Construction companies may have enough orders but not enough people to complete the work. Manufacturers may struggle to maintain production levels. Service businesses can face longer delivery times when teams remain understaffed.

The Czech Chamber of Commerce found that 51% of firms consider a lack of qualified workers their main barrier to growth.

For employers, workforce availability therefore needs to be considered alongside sales, production and expansion plans.

Hiring Plans Need to Start With the Role

Before entering a new recruitment market, employers should first define exactly what they need.

This means identifying the required trade, years of experience, technical knowledge and practical ability for each position. Employers hiring in volume should also decide which skills are essential and which can be developed after joining.

When the requirement is clear, the selection of candidates will be more useful, and the time spent reviewing unsuitable profiles will be reduced.

Build Workforce Requirements Before Demand Peaks

Czechia’s labour pool is also becoming smaller. Around 40,000 more people leave the labour market each year than enter it, according to the 2026 findings.

Businesses expecting new contracts, higher production or expansion should therefore calculate future manpower needs before those requirements become urgent.
