Unlock the Key to Moving to Germany: Fill These Skills Gaps

The number of skilled workers in Germany is at an all-time low. A new study indicates that Germany’s worker shortage has reached an all-time high. According to a study by IW’s Competence Centre for Securing Skilled Workers, unfilled vacancies have increased by more than 30 % yearly while unemployment rates have decreased.

In 2022, there were 1.3 million positions in Germany for qualified experts, of which nearly 630000 workers needed to fill them.

Workers from other EU nations would typically fill such positions. However, many of these nations, like Germany, are dealing with populations that are getting older.

According to the think-tank German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Germany is, as a result, looking to third countries to fill its skilled labour shortage, which will be of “strategic importance.”

How does Germany intend to entice Skilled Labour?

According to Robert Habeck, economics and climate minister, Germany is “on the lookout for people who fancy coming to Germany to bring in their skills, expertise, and passions” due to a growinglabour shortage.

Germany is streamlining its immigration procedure to entice these skilled foreign workers. A new points-based visa system could make it easier for skilled workers to move here.

The German government also emphasised the importance of academic and vocational training at last year’s summit on skilled labour.

Which callings need talented specialists in Germany?

According to the KOFA study, Germany’s skilled worker shortage is greatest in education, nursing, health care, and social services. Sixty percent of positions in these fields lack applicants with the necessary qualifications.

According to KOFA, manufacturing, production, and the extraction of raw materials are severely impacted by a lack of skilled workers in the building trades, including construction, architecture, surveying, and building technology.

There are likewise talented work-holes in engineering;  transport and operations, travel industry and accommodation,  regulation, bookkeeping, and the board; science and IT.

  • Last year, the government’s “Make it in Germany” YouTube channel highlighted skilled craftspeople, electrical engineers, and catering professionals as desirable workers. Habeck emphasised, “We welcome people from all over the world” on the channel.

Germany wants to make it easier for skilled migrant workers to get through bureaucratic hoops. In November 2021, the country said it would allow non-EU citizens to have both nationalities for the first time. In the past, this was only allowed in very specific situations.

It also said it would make the application process easier and said it might cut down on how long someone has to live in Germany before they can apply for citizenship.

To facilitate easier entry into the German labour market, the move is a component of Germany’s strategy to modernise immigration regulations and eliminate bureaucratic obstacles.

  • Germany offers more than just the elimination of bureaucracy. Habeck describes the nation’s great working circumstances, significant salary, preparing open doors, excellent life, reasonable training, and vote-based initiative as motivations to consider moving there.

As part of the strategy to keep migrant workers, citizenship applications could also be expedited. According to some reports, skilled migrants may soon be eligible for German citizenship in as little as three years if they complete an integration course or demonstrate B1- level language skills, although this has not yet been confirmed. This is contrasted with the five or eight years without the integration course currently in use.

The nation hopes to attract and keep a strong foreign workforce by making it easier to recognize professional qualifications and apply for citizenship and visas.
