It is going to be the world’s largest green hydrogen plant, set up in the fast-developing metropolis of NEOM, Saudi Arabia. Entering full commercial operation by the end of 2026, this will be an $8.4 billion project-a monumental leap forward in green hydrogen production with probable impacts on lowering global carbon emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When completed, the facility should be capable of producing 600 tpd of carbon-free hydrogen, which could help avoid around five million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. This volume would suffice to power about 20,000 hydrogen-powered buses and trucks worldwide and would be one of the key milestones toward a clean and greener future of energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A major recruitment drive has been underway to construct a highly skilled team that will operate the plant. The recent Virtual Career Fair for the project drew more than 9,000 registrations-a testimony to the huge interest displayed in being part of this epoch-making project. Currently, it is recruiting talents in many sectors, such as corporate functions, EHSS, risk management, operations and maintenance, finance, IT, and cyber security.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To date, as of early August 2024, nationals comprise 43% of the workforce, out of which 16% are female. By the end of 2026, when the plant will be in full operation, more than 300 direct jobs will be targeted. Linkages with universities are being developed in this regard to attract the interest of young professionals to the green hydrogen sector.<\/span><\/p>\n

This hydrogen plant will be part of the core elements at <\/span>OCTAGON<\/span>, an advanced industrial complex fully powered by renewable energy within NEOM. The facility is a joint venture equally split between the major stakeholders in the energy sector and poised to become one of the pivotal plants in the world’s energy sector. The 2.2GW electrolyzers at the plant will be powered by up to 4GW of solar and wind energy, with help from more than 250 wind turbines and 5.6 million solar panels.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The resulting green hydrogen would be exported in the form of green ammonia for use in extremely hard-to-abate industries, such as heavy industry and transport. This project aligns with the wider Saudi Green Initiative that aims to ensure at least half of the Kingdom’s electricity comes from renewable sources by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n
